The temple was built about one hundred meters northeast of the temple of Pharaoh Ramesses II and dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II's chief consort, Nefertari, circa 1255 BC. Nefertari, also known as Nefertari Meritmut, was an Egyptian queen and the first of the Great Royal Wives (or principal wives) of Ramesses the Great.
