The major paramilitary organization in Nazi Germany, SS (Schutzstaffel, lit. 'Protection Squadron'), ran the concentration and death camp between 1940 and 1945. Incoming deportees were selected into different groups on the ramp between the tracks right after they arrived in Birkenau. The people who were not able to work (elderly, weak, women, children) were sometimes sent to the gas chambers directly without registration. Approximately 1.1 to 1.5 million people, most of them Jewish, have been killed in the camp and its satellites. Auschwitz stands as the symbol for the industrialized mass murder and the holocaust of Nazi Germany. Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa | usage worldwide. - Oswiecim/Poland
