Stock Photo - 30 May 2019, Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg: Akue from Togo (l) and Geradine Muponda from Simbawe offer to weave rasta plaits at the festival of encounter. The Police Directorate Saxony-Anhalt North, Churches and the Auslandsgesellschaft Sachsen-Anhalt organised the multicultural festival for non-violent coexistence between people of different origins. The reason for the festival are racist riots in 1994 during the so-called Himmelfahrtkrawallen (Ascension riots). On Ascension Day 1994, right-wing radicals had driven foreigners through the city and beat them up. At the time, the police were accused of not intervening early enough.
