The weir in the Elbe flood channel is part of an approximately 900 metre long transverse dam. It serves to provide flood protection for the cities of Magdeburg and Schönebeck. The weir has the task of equalizing the water level of the Elbe. In its size and design, the Pretzien weir is probably unique in Europe.
