Stock Photo - Italica was founded in 206 BC as a Roman military outpost. Emperor Trajan was born here in 53 AD, and so did his successor, Emperor Hadrian, in 76 AD. The city´s amphitheater, one of the largest in the Roman Empire, is very well preserved. It could accommodate 20,000 people. In the center of the arena is a great pit, that was used for gladiatorial and animal shows. It would have been covered by a wooden structure. The site has been excavated continuously since 1781.
