Stock Photo - ****File Photos** THE SHAPE OF WATER was the big winner at the 2018 Oscars on Sunday night (04Mar18). The sci-fi romance picked up the Best Picture prize, while Guillermo del Toro was named Best Director and Alexandre Desplat took home the Best Score for his work on the movie. The film, which went into the awards show with 13 nominations, also grabbed Best Production Design. Christopher Nolan's World War Two movie Dunkirk picked up three technical awards and there were double wins for Blade Runner 2049, Coco, and Darkest Hour, whose star, Gary Oldman, picked up his first Oscar for portraying former British leader Sir Winston Churchill and paid a special tribute to his 98-year-old mum, who was watching the ceremony at home. ""Thank you for your love and support,"" he said. ""Put the kettle on, I'm bringing Oscar home."" Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was also a double winner, with co-stars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell claiming the night's Lead Actress and Supporting Actor honours. McDormand literally brought the crowd to its feet during her acceptance speech when she urged all the women at the Oscars to stand up and ""look around"" in what became the ultimate 'female power' moment. Chuckling as the likes of Meryl Streep, Allison Janney and Greta Gerwig stood up, the actress said, ""We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don't talk to us about it at the parties tonight, invite us into your office in a couple of days, or you can come to ours... and we'll tell you all about them.""
