Ice speedway racing is fast becoming the latest extreme sport to take off in the colder areas of the world. Bikers slip and slide around a snowbound track while performing stunts and tricks for extra points. These hardcore devotees raced during the final round of the 2018 Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championships in Heerenveen, Nederlands last week (8Apr18). The rules are quite simple: ride fast, don't crash and get the finish line first! Modified motorcyles have a longer wheelbase than orthodox speedway racers, but possess the same methanol burning engines. The two-speed gearbox bikes have no breaks and rely solely on their momentum to avoid crashing - no easy task when skating across a rink at speeds approaching 80 mph (130 km/h) on the straights, and 60 mph (100 km/h) on the bends.
