The renowned theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author died in March 2018, at the age of 76, after a long battle with slow onset motor neuron disease, which left him paralysed in a wheelchair and able to communicate only with a speech generating device, powered using only a single cheek muscle. His ashes will be interred in the Abbey alongside other the graves of other notable scientists, including Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
