Stock Photo - MARS Reull Vallis -- 15 Jan 2004 -- This picture was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard ESA's (European Space Agency) Mars Express orbiter, in colour and 3D, in orbit 18 on 15 January 2004 from a height of 273 km. The location is east of the Hellas basin at 41o South and 101o East. The area is 100 km across, with a resolution of 12 m per pixel, and shows a channel (Reull Vallis) once formed by flowing water or that possibly still has some in it. The landscape is seen in a vertical view, North is at the top. Mars Express's sensitive instruments have already picked up signs frozen water at the Martian South Pole, backing up evidence from NASA missions that the planet once had oceans of it's own in the past and may still have some of this water retained beneath the surface. NB This is an uncorrected version of the original release -- Picture © Lightroom / ESA.
