Stock Photo - Ice storm devastates western Iowa January 20, 2009. Thick rime ice coated things during freezing fog before the storm. The ice storm then started off with freezing drizzle which locked the rime ice in place on the branches. As the freezing rain kicked in, it was now able to accumulate over a much larger surface area thanks to that rime ice already on things. Some areas of western Iowa recieved over 1 inch of ice accumulation on those rime ice formations, which resulted in an amazing amount of ice on power lines and branches. The 2009-2010 winter season in this region was one for the record books, with Omaha Nebraska breaking their 12, 9, 6, 3, 2, and 1 inch snow duration records, for longest straight time of those amounts on the ground.
