Garden was founded in 1791 by Historian and antiquarian Bengt Bergius and his brother Peter, a physician and scientist and was originally located at their mansion. It moved to its current location in 1885. Today the garden is owned by the Swedish government and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Originally a stable and then housing for students and gardeners the house burned down in 1925 after a lightening strike. It was rebuilt and has been used as offices and housing.
