Stock Photo - Jan. 01, 1957 - Queen Mother to unveil Dunkirk Memorial: The Dunkirk Memorial which Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother will unveil on Saturday, June 29th, 1957, commemorates nearly 4,7000 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who fell in the campaign in France and Belguim in 1939 and 1940 and to whom the fortune of war denied the known and honoured grave given to their comrades. Although in purpose this Memorial is a campaign memorial, bearing the names of soldiers only it commemorates an action in which the Royal navy, the Royal Air Force and the Merchant Navy took great parts even though their dead are commemorated on their own memorials elsewhere. It is therefore the Commission's intention that this ceremony, besides being the unveiling of an Army Memorial, shall also be an act of remembrance of all those in the King's service who lost their lives built by the Imperial War Grave Commission to the design by Mr. P.D. Hepworth, F.R.I.B.A. adjoins the Dunkirk Town Cemetery which lies on the eastern outskirts of the town on the south side of the road to Furnes.
