They were reenacting a famous lark carried out in the mid-summer of 1950 when a black tie boat race was held on the river Cam between the celebrating societies. And the man standing in the middle-the former Liberal Leader, Jeremy Thorpe, rowed in the Oxford eight that year, and this year started the race, with Lord Mountbatten's old samurai sword which was won by Oxford. ------ and Cambridge about to start off with their evening dressed crews on the Thames at Putney.
