Stock Photo - 1984 - New York Harbor, June 1984 The 305 foot tall Statue of Liberty , made of copper, iron, and concrete has been wrapped in a framework of aluminum scaffolding in order to facilitate the vast restoration project aimed at having the lady of the harbor refurbished in time for the centennial celebrations on July 4th, 1986. During these two year period a new torch will be built, modeled on sculptor Auguste Bartholdi s original design. In addition each of the 1,200 heavy iron straps that presently support the statue s copper skin will be refabricated piece by piece of modern alloy. The island will be open to the public during restoration and many of the repairs will be taking place in full view of the visitors to the island. The restoration program of both the Statue of Liberty and the neighboring historic immigration station on Ellis Island is being carried out at a cost of 30 million and is entirely funded by donations from private citizens, corporations, organizations and foundations.
