Stock Photo - Megalosaurus is a genus of extinct meat-eating dinosaurs, theropods, from the Middle Jurassic period in EarthÔÇÖs history, 166 million years ago. It lived in what is now southern England ...
. The first dinosaur fossil ever found, as long ago as 1676, was probably a fragment of thigh bone that belonged to Megalosaurus. This animal was a medium-sized theropod, 6 to 7 m long and weighing about one tonne. This illustration on the right shows the animal as it was originally imagined to appear, back in the nineteenth century. The image is based on the famous statues of the animal in London's Crystal Palace Park. We know now that it walked on two legs like other theropods (left).
