The airfield was built in the 1930s and used by Heinkel-Werke and the Wehrmacht air force. After the end of World War II, Soviet occupation forces almost completely dismantled the facilities and used the remains of the factory airport as a military airfield. Around 2003, the newly constructed B 96 federal highway was built on a large section of the runway as Oranienburg's western bypass. According to the Oranienburg city administration, it should also be possible for commercial enterprises to settle on the approximately 30-hectare northern part of the site.
