Stock Photo - 02 July 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Naumburg (Saale): Leipzig artist Michael Triegel speaks at a press conference in Naumburg Cathedral about a three-winged altarpiece for which he created the central section. With his work, Triegel has completed again the church painting in Naumburg Cathedral created in 1519 by Lukas Cranach the Elder, which was later partly destroyed. The three-winged altarpiece had once been created for the altar of Mary in Naumburg's west choir. The central part with a depiction of the Mother of God Mary with Child had been destroyed in 1541 in the course of an anti-image action. It was replaced by Triegel's work and now forms a unit with the two preserved original side wings. The large-format side wings created by Cranach the Elder with portraits of the two founding bishops and various saints survived the centuries. The complete altarpiece with the works, which were created about 500 years apart, now stands in Naumburg's west choir. Michael Triegel is considered the most important representative of the New Leipzig School. Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa. - Naumburg (Saale)/Saxony-Anhalt/Germany
