The custom of the Bremen ice betting goes back to Bremen merchants who in 1828 bet whether the Weser would be frozen over at the beginning of January 1829. During the ritual, a 99-pound tailor must use a hot iron to check whether the river is frozen or ice-free. The spectacle attracts many onlookers to the Weser every year.
