Stock Photo - 09 August 2022, Saxony, Grimma: Axel Bobbe of the Saxony State Dam Administration stands in front of caulking gates for flood protection of the old town of Grimma. A wall more than two kilometers long has been built to protect the town from flooding by the Mulde River. 90 percent of the nearly 60 million dollar protective structure is under water. The above-ground sections of the wall were clad with quarry stone. Since then, 78 closure units ranging from small five-kilogram flaps to a 16-ton gate have prevented the water from the Mulde from entering the city. The system now protects the city from a flood like the one in 2013, and even the massive flood of 2002 would cause much less damage today. The flood of 2002 was one of the biggest natural disasters after the Second World War. Large parts of the old town of Grimma sank meters deep under the floodwaters.
