Since 2009, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration has been erecting a new ship lift to replace the old technical monument on the Oder-Havel waterway dating from 1934, which is considered a bottleneck on the waterway from Berlin to the Baltic Sea. Currently the lower outer harbour is being excavated by excavators. To do this, about 200,000 cubic meters of earth have to be moved. The test run of the new lift is to begin in about a year's time. The costs for this major project amount to around 300 million euros. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa. - Niederfinow/Brandenburg/Germany
