Stock Photo - 17 May 2019, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Karnin: The remains of the railway lift bridge stand in the Peene river between the island of Usedom and the mainland. The bridge was completed in 1933 as the most modern railway lifting bridge in Europe at the time. The lifting bridge deck is 47.9 metres long, the maximum lifting height above water level is 28.0 metres. In 1945 it was blown up in front of the advancing Russian army. The railway line via Ducherow and Karnin to Heringsdorf was the shortest and fastest connection from Berlin to the island of Usedom until 1945. The Karniner Bridge is not included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2015 to 2030.
