Stock Photo - 20 April 2023, Saxony, Leipzig: Demolition excavators are getting to grips with the last remnants of the former Halberg Guss foundry. The foundry, which was built by Japanese in the 1980s, was already casting engine blocks for VW in GDR times under the name VEB Metallgußwerk Leipzig (Megu). After reunification, the company was taken over by Halberg-Guss, sold to the Bosnian Prevent Group in 2018 and fell into disarray in the wake of their disputes over supply contracts to Volkswagen. It ceased operations in September 2020. The Hagedorn Group of companies from Gütersloh has purchased the 150,000-square-meter site and plans to prepare the area for a business park after demolition. This will mark the end of over 100 years of foundry tradition at this site. Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa/ZB. - Leipzig/Saxony/Germany
