The narrow tunnel between the city centre and the Sonnenberg district is now being upgraded with a new lighting concept, among other things. In addition, 1.40 metre high white letters on the walls form a quotation from the song ""Wie ich"" by the band Kraftklub: ""Ich wär'gern weniger wie ich, ein bisschen mehr so wie du"". In the vernacular, the previously rather dark, 220-metre-long underpass is popularly known as the ""germ tube"". In two construction phases, the entrance structures as well as the tunnel tube have been renovated since June 2020. The tunnel was finally opened in November 2021. Letters on wall design now complete the work in the tunnel. According to the city, it has invested 1.18 million euros in the renovation; the bulk of the money came from EU funds.
