Scientists there are testing an airlift system - a new, environmentally friendly mining technology for the extraction of raw materials using high-pressure water jets. Mineral resources are crushed with compressed air and water and conveyed to the surface. The process no longer requires any underground workings; initial experience has been gained with uranium, phosphate and coal. The research project, which is funded by the European Union, is carried out together with Polish and Czech experts. Photo: Sebastian Willnow/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB. - Freiberg/Saxony/Germany
