In Japan, cherry blossoms, called sakura there, are an unmistakable symbol of the arrival of spring. In 1990, out of joy over the reunification of Germany, the Japanese television station TV-Asahi called for a fundraising campaign to collect money for the planting of Japanese cherry trees in Germany.
