The SADR was proclaimed by the Polisario liberation front on 27 February 1976 in the Western Sahara region after the evacuation of the colonizing Spanish forces. The SADR government controls nearly 20·25% of the territory it claims while Morocco controls and administers the rest of the disputed territory, and calls these lands its southern provinces.
