Stock Photo - 28 June 2019, Mexico, Matamoros: A family from Guatemala stands in front of the migrant hostel ""San Juan Diego y San Francisco de Asis"", where the mother of almost two-year-old Valeria, who drowned in a border river, was accommodated. ""The joy that came up in me at the sight of the border river can hardly be described. We thought it would be very easy to cross the river,"" says the father as he looks back. Just like the drowned Oscar M., he had thought of tying his little daughter to his back. ""My wife got scared because I often went to the river and watched the current,"" says the Guatemalan. The family was about to jump into the water, but was stopped by a group on the shore. People persuaded them not to take the step. The group assured the father that he would not be deported and would get help for an asylum application in the USA. ""The long waiting times, however, bring many to the brink of despair,"" the man admits. Photo: brenda Bazan/dpa. - Matamoros/Tamaulipas/Mexico
