Stock Photo - 29 September 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Memleben: Leonhard Helten, project leader from the Institute for European Art History and Archaeology at the University of Halle stands on the grounds of Memleben Monastery. Archaeologists have determined the exact location of the former church of Emperor Otto II (955-983) on the Memleben monastery grounds. During the excavations, Otto II's church from 979 has now been discovered with certainty for the first time. The building was an unusually large church, comparable to the Ottonian churches in Cologne and Magdeburg. In addition, a wall was discovered that may have belonged to the predecessor church of Otto I (912-973) and Henry I (c. 876-936). In the 10th century, an imperial palace and a monastery stood in Memleben. The monastery of Memleben was first mentioned in documents in 979. The monastery church was 82 meters long and 39.5 meters wide. Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa. - Memleben/Saxony-Anhalt/Germany
