Stock Photo - 29 September 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Memleben: Students of historic preservation are working on the grounds of Memleben Monastery on parts of a stone wall that may have belonged to the predecessor church of Otto I (912-973) and Henry I (c. 876-936). Archaeologists have also determined the exact location of the former church (background) of Emperor Otto II (955-983) on the monastery grounds. During the excavations, the church of Otto II from 979 has now been discovered with certainty for the first time. The building was an unusually large church, comparable to the Ottonian churches in Cologne and Magdeburg. In the 10th century an imperial palace and a monastery stood in Memleben.
