Stock Photo - 31 July 2019, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Raben Steinfeld: Frederick Klein, a cone picker, climbs up the tree trunk at a height of about 40 metres to collect cones in the top of a Douglas fir for the extraction of seeds. The five rope-secured special climbers from a company in Lower Saxony harvest the genetically valuable cones from 12 to 15 trees every day. The cones are later cleaned in a kiln, dried and the seed is released. The seeds obtained are used to grow young trees, which are urgently needed for the reforestation of forests damaged by drought.
