Stock Photo - July 10th is the anniversary of what was one of the greatest environmental disasters ever to occur in Italy: the Seveso disaster, in 1976. The first signs of the dioxin leak from the plant that day were an acrid smell and inflammation of the eyes. Only after seven days did the news appear in the newspapers. The Times cataloged it as the eighth global environmental disaster...Research carried out in the late nineties on the female population showed, twenty years later, a relationship between exposure to TCDD in the prepubertal period and some disorders: the probability of having neonatal hormonal alterations resulting from the residence in zone A of the mothers is 6, 6 times greater than in the control group. Hormonal alterations focus on TSH, whose alteration, widely studied in environmental epidemiology, is the cause of physical and intellectual defects during development..In June 1977 the reclamation operations in the area were entrusted to a special special office for Seveso which, between 1981 and 1984, began the construction of two waterproofed containment tanks in zone A: one of 200,000 m³ in the Seveso area. and one of 80000 m³ in that of Meda. The tanks are made up of four different safety barriers, integrated by control systems to check for any leaks..The polluted material contained in the tanks is mainly represented by the surface soil of the entire zone A, which was removed on average to a depth of 46 centimeters; the Seveso basin also contains the remains of buildings, personal objects, the remains of over 80000 dead or suppressed animals and also the equipment used for the reclamation itself..In 1983 it was decided to build a park in the former zone A, covering the containment tanks and using earth from other areas of Lombardy for the surface layer; the works began the following year and ended in 1986: here was born the Bosco delle Querce.
