Stock Photo - The Prague 6 town hall has decided to cover the statue of Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev with a veil in order to protect it against vandalisation, the town hall spokesman, Ondrej Sramek, told journalists on August 30, 2019. Now scaffolding (pictured) is being built around the statue, the scaffolding is to protect the statue against further vandal attacks, Sramek said. ""We are not a priori against having the statue here, but we are unable to protect it efficiently,"" he added. The statue will be covered pending the decision on what to do with it next. The Prague 6 town hall will discuss its further fate on September 12. he Konev monument was installed in Prague's western 6th District in 1980 in honour of his contribution to the liberation of Prague in 1945. Last year, the local town hall had an explanatory plaque installed at the statue also to show Konev's dark role in the suppression of the Budapest uprising in 1956, the Berlin Wall construction in 1961 and the Soviet-led military invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The vandals' attacks always met with protests of Russia. The town hall has now suggested that the statue be transferred to the Russian embassy complex, if possible. The Russian embassy sharply condemned the incident. It said the barbarous act was an offence to the memory of the Red Army soldiers who had died during the liberation of Czechoslovakia. The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the charge d'affaires of the Czech embassy in Moscow in protest against the act of vandalism. (CTK Photo/Katerina Sulova)
