Stock Photo - A view of the graveyard village of Zapalnya at the Zhrebchevo dam near the town of Tvardica, east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, Monday, June, 8, 2015. The Church of St. Ivan Rilski was once part of the abandoned village of Zapalnya, which settled around the 15th century, however during the 1965 Zhrebchevo dam construction, the whole area and village were submerged in water. At the bottom of the dam sits all the houses, the school, community center and all the beautiful rose fields. Its inhabitants managed many of the best plantations of rose oil in the country. There were more than 120 rose oil distillation installations. The only thing left as evidence of the settlement are the ruins of this church, built over the ruins of another church from IV-IX century and the graveyard on the top of the hill behind. In the front of the graveyard, faced at the dam, residents erected a plaque to honour their village, which reads, ""Village of Zapalnya, Settled at XV century, force moved 1962 year"". Lately the area of the Zhrebchevo dam has become one of the area's most popular tourist attractions. Sometimes, when the waters cover the church it becomes an hot spot for scuba divers and this weekend for the first time it was visited by a canoe club from the town of Ruse, which is located at another north part of the Balkan country Where: Tvardica, Bulgaria When: 08 Jun 2015 Credit: Impact Press Group/WENN.com
