The Volunteer Training Corps. was the 'Dad's Army' of the Great War, comprising a variety of over age and unfit men, the VTC nevertheless grew to a formidable force by the end of the war. It provided both a means of training under age would-be soldiers and of keeping guard on vulnerable points. The men wore a distinctive armband with the letters 'GR' - 'Georgius Rex' the origin of at least one of its wartime nicknames, such as 'Gorgeous Wrecks !'. Trench Art'
