This amusing cartoon shows the efforts of some of the members of the VTC (Volunteer Training Corps.) c. 1914. The Volunteer Training Corps. was the 'Dad's Army' of the Great War, comprising a variety of over age and unfit men, the VTC nevertheless grew to a formidable force by the end of the war. It provided both a means of training under age would-be soldiers and of keeping guard on vulnerable points. The men wore a distinctive armband with the letters 'GR' - 'Georgius Rex' the origin of at least one of its wartime nicknames, such as 'Gorgeous Wrecks !'. Trench Art'
