Stock Photo - Apr. 04, 1962 - A Dracone carrying 26,000 gallons of oil makes experimental trip on inland waterway : Towed by a single British Waterways tug a floating dracone, a 150 feet long, sausage -like container, made of nylon and rubber, and carrying 26,000 gallons of diesel oil, made an experiments trip from avonmouth docks to Gloucester, passing through the lock at sharpness. The object of the trial is to demonstrate, among other things, that dracones can be operated in confined waterways. Dracones( the name come from the ancient Greek works for 'Serpent' ) have been used on open water and rivers abroad. Photo shows The tug towing the floating dracone is seen alongside three other waterway fuel tankers in the sharpness lock during the experimental trip yesterday. The three fuel tankers are carrying loads equivalent to that carried by the dracone. (Credit Image: © Keystone Press Agency/Keystone USA via ZUMAPRESS.com)
