A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism. Soon after the German occupation of France, he was arrested by the Gestapo, but managed to escape and flee to America with the help of journalist Varian Fry and Peggy Gugenheim (1898-1979) whom he later married, and who was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim, who went down with the Titanic in 1912.
