Leopold VI entering Vienna in 1219. In 1219, Leopold VI, Duke of Austria, entered Vienna in a grand procession, taking possession of the city as the new Duke. The procession began on 23 April and was a grand and impressive event, in celebration of Leopold's success in taking control of the city. It was a major event, attended by a large crowd that greeted the duke with enthusiastic cheers as he rode through the city gates on a white horse. The procession began from the South Gate, then passed through the Jewish quarter before making its way to the palace. Leopold was accompanied by nobles, knights, and burghers of Vienna, who each paid homage to the new duke by bowing as he passed by. Along the route, Leopold also caught sight of a procession of clerics, who had come to pay homage to him as well. The streets were lined with flowers, banners, and carpets, while the goldsmiths hung their silver insignia from the windows. At the palace, Leopold was greeted by the mayor of Vienna and other dignitaries, who then celebrated the duke with music and feasts.
