It was built in 1927 as the Legislative Council Hall, used for sessions of the Penang government. The building has two stories and features two towers, a tower clock, and a large dome. Inside is the assembly chamber, with a wide central aisle flanked by seating on either side. There is also a space used for judicial proceedings. In addition, the State Assembly Hall contains galleries, offices, and meeting rooms. The hall was the site of the historic decision to join the Malaysian Federation in 1957. Today, the hall serves as the meeting place for the state assembly meetings and is an essential landmark in Penang.
