This 1000-year ols Inuit settlement Uummannaq, (in1919 given the namne Thule by Knud Rasmussen) which had to be abandoned in 1953 lies beside the US Thule Air Base, constucted in 1951. This is the place the inuits lived before they were forced to leave for a new settelment that formed the small village Qaanaaq in northern Greenland, not to far from Thule Air base.
