Stock Photo - People visit the Thracian ancient monumental archaeological complex Perperikon. Perperikon is one of the most ancient monumental megalithic structures, entirely carved into the rocks in one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bulgaria. Religious activity at the top of the cliff began in the 5th century B.C. It is associated with the beliefs of the Copper Age people, who started the cult of the sun god. Here they established the first sanctuary and started leaving food containers for the gods. The latest archaeological research show clearly that, according to the legends, two crucial prophecies were made from the altar of this temple. The first one predicted great conquest and glory for Alexander the Macedonian, and the second, made a several centuries later, predetermined the power and strength for the first Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus. The artifacts discovered during the excavation work of the town are remarkable. Most impressive are the fragments from a patrician coronet and the coin of the Byzantine Emperor Flavius Iustinus, also known as Justin I. The richest gold mines in Europe, dating back to the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, were also found only 2 kilometres from Perperikon. That was undoubtedly the reason for the several wars waged there. Featuring: Atmosphere Where: Perperikon, Bulgaria When: 15 Jul 2014 Credit: Impact Press Group/WENN.com
