Stock Photo - This 1884 illustration shows a section of the Massimi Mosaic found in Rome. It is believed to date to the 12th century A. D. While its depictions of dress and armor are inaccurate, its does offer a view of how people of the time viewed ancient Rome's gladiatorial combats. This section shows two murmillones, Maternus and Symmachius fighting while two umpires watch. The text says that Symmachius wounds (misit ferrum = sends an iron into ) Maternus.
