Stock Photo - Vadstena Castle is a castle building built as a defense facility by King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century in Vadstena in Vadstena Municipality, Östergötland County. The idea of defense was abandoned and a representative home was furnished in the building by the sons of Vasa. After the time as a royal residence, the halls were used for e.g. a. damask weaving and as a grain magazine. In 1899, the National Archives moved into the castle where it remains in the eastern half even today (2019). The western half shows royal interiors from the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle has been a state monument since January 25, 1935.. In 1997, extensive work began on rebuilding demolished ramparts around the courtyard and restoring the two square towers in the southern corner of the courtyard, works that entailed one of the biggest changes at a Swedish cultural-historical monument during the 20th century. .
