St Thomas Aquinas (1226-1274), called Doctor Angelicus, Italian scholastic philosopher, Christian theologian and member of the Dominican orde, holds an open book, perhaps his Summa Theologia. St Anthony of Padua (c1193-1231), Franciscan preacher, called 'The Hammer of Heretics', holds an open book and a madonna lily. The Dominicans followed Aquinas's teaching, while the Franciscans followed that of his rival Duns Scotus (c1265-1308), called Doctor Subtilis. Originally in the monastery of San Domenico da Fiesole, now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia.
