In 1905, Archibald Leitch was commissioned to design the first stand, a 120 yard long structure along the east side, seating 5,000 people, with the other three sides of the stadium open, in a vast bowl, the banking of which was made up of thousands of tons of material, excavated during the building of the nearby underground line.
