His reportage for the Daily Mail in France during World War I received national recognition, though it met with criticism and was parodied by soldiers as well. His book With the British on the Somme (1917) portrayed the English soldier in a very favourable light. Both France and the British Empire rewarded him with knighthoods after the war.
