Considered one of the most important painters of the Early Northern Renaissance art, Jan Van Eyck was one of the founders of the Flemish School. He popularized and perfected the newly developed oil painting technique by carefully applying several semi-transparent layers of paint to the panels. . . In this Annunciation diptych the artist uses the grisaille painting technique, using multi-layered shades of grey to create the illusion of a sculptural group. The panels show the Archangel Gabriel on the left and the Virgin Mary on the right holding a holy book, while a dove hovers above her representing the purity and the Holy Spirit.
