Soon to be based at Singapore is Britain?s newest and fastest cable-laying ship, the 3,000 ton Recorder, which can travel 10,000 miles without refueling. The Recorder is claimed to be the first cable ship to be designed to handle the new deep-sea submarine ?repeaters? or under water amplifiers. From Singapore the ship will help maintain the 20,000 mile sections in the Far East of British Cable and Wireless? 150,000 mile cable system. Some of the cable on her route, between Colombo across the Pacific to Vancouver Island, lies 3? mile down, and to locate it she has an echo sounder which will measure any depth down to 5 miles.
