These shields feature the arms of the Dutch East India Company, ornamented with Neptune and a mermaid, and those of Batavia, flanked by Dutch lions. According to the inscription on the latter, the city of Jakarta (now Jakarta) was 'Conquered on 30 May in the year 1619'. The same year Governor-General Jan Pietersz Coen renamed it Batavia and built a castle with dockyards, warehouses and offices.
