AN ARTIST has turned an abandoned old people’s home into a colourful zoo by painting giant animals on the walls. A giraffe peers out of an upstairs window, a massive pigeon looks beadily down at curious visitors from what appears to be huge hole in the brickwork and a Jurassic Park twist is added by the Tyrannosaurus Rex that stalks prey in the gardens. The building, tucked away in the sleepy town Malmesbury, Wilts, closed down six years ago when the residents were moved to a new care facility on the other side of town. But it proved too tempting for street artist Luke Hollingworth, who lives just around the corner. Now it is home to an elephant, a giraffe and a rhino as well as other creatures. He said:” I'm always on the lookout for interesting walls to paint on, interesting and most importantly not likely to get arrested painting on - though I may yet be proved wrong on this. I got wind that the old people’s home was going to be redeveloped so that set the grey cells racing.” The rural Banksy, who works under the name of Syd, once turned the tables on fellow artist Damien Hirst by painting him inside a tank of formaldehyde and setting it up in a field for cattle to appreciate. His latest project at Burnham House started with the T.Rex, which proved such a hit locals were turning up to have their picture taken with it. “My 18-month-old daughter Daisy was into dinosaurs, so I thought why not? She liked it, so I painted a penguin for her, then a hare. Just to see the smile on her face made it worthwhile.” He was then asked to do some artwork for a campaign to save the Black Rhino in Kenya and was inspired to add African animals to his growing menagerie.
