The lower part where the queen is, contains enough honey for the entire colony. In order to limit being attacked by the bees, Arnaud smokes out the hive. The worker bees are alerted by this signal and get ready to leave the hive by eating large quantities of honey as a reserve. The bees are therefore less agressive to man.
